All About Wellness – Carla Oates, Founder of The Beauty Chef
Carla Oates, Founder of The Beauty Chef shares her wellness secrets with us.
What daily wellness rituals do you follow?
I wake up naturally at about 5:45am. I try really hard not to check my tech first thing in the morning. Then I go for a walk or run along Bondi Beach, stretch, breathe in the ocean air and soak up the negative ions and when I return home, I have some of my GLOW Inner Beauty Powder in a glass of purified water. I love walking in the morning as it tends to help get rid of any busyness in my mind; I tend to walk it out and then towards the end of the walk, I am thinking very positively, constructively and calmly – ready for the day ahead!
What is your beauty philosophy?
I am a big believer that “beauty begins in the belly” – that gut health is paramount for healthy, radiant skin and overall wellbeing.
How do you like to keep in shape?
I always like to preface breakfast with some form of exercise or meditation, whether it be a Pilates class, a game of tennis, a strengthening class or a walk along Bondi Beach where I live, or sometimes a walk around Centennial Park (my bush fix in the city).
Can you talk us through your ‘day on a plate’. What do you typically eat which day and why?
I eat often during the day – I love my food! I eat a good solid brekkie and have a smoothie for morning tea, a salad with protein for lunch, smoothie for afternoon tea or cold pressed juice and light dinner. I eat carrots with hummus and or nuts and seeds and in between. I also love the occasional raw treat like a bliss ball.
Breakfast is usually eggs in some form, with mushrooms, tomatoes and/or with salmon or a protein based porridge of some variety – like buckwheat and quinoa, miso, apple and almond and maple porridge. I’ll have a glass of GLOW Inner Beauty Powder with a splash of COLLAGEN Inner Beauty Boost – they make up my internal beauty routine. GLOW is like my internal moisturiser and COLLAGEN is like my internal skin serum.
Protein is very important for breakfast and to have throughout the day as it is probably the best way to maintain metabolic efficiency, keep you feeling fuller for longer and keeping your blood sugar levels balanced. It also helps to increase your basal metabolic rate.
What is your biggest wellness discovery?
My biggest wellness discovery ever is prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics and probiotics work to improve gut health and boost your immune system. They also support the body’s detoxification and elimination pathways. Probiotics directly neutralise certain chemicals and toxins so that they don’t have to be processed through the liver. This helps to ease the burden on the liver and the skin. A happy gut also means a healthy immune system, healthier skin, better absorption of nutrients, metabolism of hormones.
More and more studies are showing the link between skin health and gut health. Where there is gut inflammation, there will be skin inflammation. People who have a healthier gut microbiota, have a healthier fatty acid profile in their skin, therefore their skin is more hydrated, moisturised and plumper.
You can find Prebiotics and Probiotics in all of The Beauty Chef Inner Beauty Products, which can easily be added into your daily routine. You can enjoy them in smoothies, water, yogurt, raw bars, bliss balls and lots more. Which is your favourite Bodhi J treatment and why?
I’ve not had the chance to have a spa treatment at Bodhi J yet – it’s on my ‘to do’ list for when I next visit Perth! I always relish a therapeutic massage and I love the eco-luxe skin care brand Sodashi that Bodhi J stock, the products are beautiful and non-toxic and a staple in my beauty cupboard. I like the look of the 90 minute Sodashi Signature Massage to boost lymphatic circulation and for pure relaxation – bliss!
