The why, what and how of detox
Bodhi J Founder Tania Taylor has just finished a mid-year 13 week detox. She talks to us about why she did it, how she stuck at it, and what the benefits are.
1. Why did you decide to do a thirteen week detox? What were your goals?
I have been seeing a naturopath for the past four years and have been doing an annual six to nine week detox mid-year. This year I decided to extend the detox process by a few more weeks for a deeper cleanse experience. My main goals are to achieve an improved sense of wellbeing by eliminating the body of toxins, boosting energy levels and refocusing my mind on making healthy choices.
2. What sort of detox did you do? What was your plan?
My naturopath developed a cleanse for my specific needs. It consists of three key stages – digestion, liver and kidneys. I eliminate all dairy, sugar, grains, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods from my diet, and replace these with organic whole foods, including lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and some meat, as well as supporting supplements for each stage of the detox.
I eat five to six times a day, and drink a minimum of three litres of water a day. I start the day with dry body brushing to stimulate circulation and to boost the lymphatic system to flush out toxins, always brushing towards the heart. I also exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes daily and eliminate as many chemicals as possible from my daily routine – which is quite easy for me because we have whole range of natural products to choose from at Bodhi J Spas!
3. Was it difficult to keep to your detox? How did you maintain the detox for over three months?
I actually find it pretty easy to stick to the cleanse once I put my mind to it and begin. It really helps that I have the support of very encouraging family and friends. Everyone was so accommodating when it came to dinner parties or get-togethers to have healthy whole food options on hand for me!
4. When did you start to notice the benefits of the detox?
By about week two I noticed that my energy levels had really improved. By the end of week four I had lost weight, my skin was much clearer and brighter and I was even coping better with stress. I saw these benefits increase as I continued on the detox.
5. How do you feel now after the detox?
AMAZING! That’s why I keep doing these each year.
6. How are you maintaining the benefits from the detox now that you have finished?
Doing a cleanse is like pressing a reset button in my brain, it refocuses me on making the right choices. That’s what it’s really all about for me.
7. What advice do you have for someone embarking on a detox?
I would highly recommend seeking the advice of a naturopath or nutritionist to evaluate your needs and create a personalised program specifically for you, someone who can support you on your detox journey.
